The top five New Orleans Saints undrafted offensive players in history: Fan’s opinion

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:48 pm

When Sean Payton became the Saints head coach, the New Orleans offense quickly became one of the NFL’s best. In fact, the New Orleans offense was the best I had ever seen in my life as a diehard Saints fan. But while players such as Drew Brees and Reggie Bush received most of the wholesale nike shoes attention, undrafted players like Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore also contributed mightily. In fact, the New Orleans Saints have had many great undrafted offensive players through the years. Take a look back at the top five all-time undrafted New Orleans Saints offensive players.
5. Guido Merkens (1980-85)

Long before Kordell “Slash” Stewart entered the NFL, Guido Merkens was the original “Slash.” The versatile, cheap sunglasses undrafted Merkens was a quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, punter, punt returner and kick returner in New Orleans. As an offensive player, Merkens threw two TD passes, caught 32 passes and had 43 rushing yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Merkens recovered four fumbles for the New Orleans Saints.
4. Boo Williams (2001-04)

The only undrafted Saints tight end on the list, Eddie “Boo” Williams became an offensive threat under head coach Jim Haslett. After a productive 2000 season at Arkansas, the undrafted Williams played in four games with the Saints in 2001. His best offensive numbers in New Orleans were put up in 2003 when he caught 41 passes for 436 yards and five TDs. In his career with the New Orleans Saints, Williams caught 107 passes for 1,143 yards and 12 TDs. cheap coach handbags

3. Aaron Stecker (2004-08)

Originally playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Aaron Stecker joined the Saints in 2004. In addition to his duties at running back, the undrafted Stecker was also an outstanding kick returner for New Orleans. In fact, in 2004, he became one of only 11 Saints players to ever return a kickoff for a TD. As an offensive player for the Saints, he rushed for 1,109 yards and tallied 908 receiving yards. In New Orleans, Stecker had nine total TDs.

2. Lance Moore (2006-present)

In my opinion, there is no debate concerning the top two undrafted offensive players in New Orleans Saints history. After an outstanding offensive college career at Toledo, Lance Moore went undrafted in 2004. After working his way up from the practice squad, Moore took advantage of the playing time he received due to injuries. In the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts, Moore’s two-point conversion for the Saints is one of the best offensive plays I have ever seen. Lance Moore has 192 career catches and 22 TDs for the New Orleans Saints. cheap jordan shoes

1. Pierre Thomas (2007-present)

In the 2007 preseason, I remember telling a friend of mine that the undrafted Pierre Thomas looked a lot better at running back than fourth round pick Antonio Pittman. Fortunately, Sean Payton agreed. Pittman was cut and Thomas gradually became the Saints featured back as Deuce McAllister’s offensive production began to wane. So far in New Orleans, Thomas has rushed for 1,939 yards and also has 938 receiving yards. In fact, Thomas has 25 total offensive TDs for New Orleans. Pierre Thomas is clearly the greatest undrafted offensive player in New Orleans Saints history.

Randy Moss and other NFL players who retired too early

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:46 pm

Randy Moss shockingly announced his retirement on Monday, August 1. He spent time on three different teams last season, the Patriots, Vikings and Titans. Although Moss did not have a good 2010 season by his standards, it wasn’t for lack of talent. A good deal of turmoil followed Moss last season; however it is still surprised he opted to retire. Moss is or rather, was a seven time Pro Bowler, and had 153 career touchdowns, 954 catches, and 14,858 receiving yards in thirteen seasons. wholesale nike shoes

Moss is one of a few very talented NFL players to retire too early.

Barry Sanders

Barry Sanders is one the greatest running backs of all time, but retired after only ten seasons in the NFL. The Detroit Lions star rushed for over 15,000 yards made the pro bowl in each of his ten seasons. He ran for 99 touchdowns and is the third leading rusher in NFL history. He retired at only the age of 30, though he probably could have played for a minimum of two more seasons.

Brett Favre

Favre has retired three or four times by my count, though he shouldn’t have retired in the first place. Whether or not Favre returns this season, I believe he “retired” merely to demand a change of scenery. I don’t know why he wanted out of Green Bay (they wouldn’t want him now anyway) but Favre has some life in him today and could still be starting for many NFL Franchises. cheap jordan shoes

Tiki Barber

Barber shouldn’t have retired and I have proof. Tiki’s twin brother Ronde is still playing for the Buccaneers. Nearly genetically identical, both Barbers still have the talent to continue in the NFL. I realize Tiki wanted to pursue his dream of being a reporter and sports personality, but he should have kept running. Barber enjoyed a great level of success as a member of the NY Giants and walked away before it was his time. He is currently attempting a return to the NFL, but due to his lengthy absence, I’m not positive on how successful he will be.

Kurt Warner

Kurt Warner retired too early. Yes, he was 38 years old, but he still had some gas in his tank. Warner nearly single-handedly (with the help of Boldin and Fitzgerald) won a Super Bowl, but decided to call it quits immediately afterword. Maybe Warner saw the Cardinals were on their way down, but Warner could still play. He’s one of the best quarterbacks of the past fifteen years and could continue to play today. There are a number of teams looking for quarterback help who could use Warner in the pocket still. cheap nfl jerseys

Derek Jeter to Create Quite the Spectacle Friday Night at Yankee Stadium

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:01 am

NEW YORK—Like rows of impeccably cut diamonds in a jewelry store, expect all five tiers of Yankee Stadium to glisten with tens of thousands of flash bolts going off simultaneously each and every time Derek Jeter swings his bat. cheap nfl jerseys

Such a sight, a sight to behold in person, has become something of a Bronx tradition in recent years.

In 2007, when the New York Yankees still called the old stadium home, it was Alex Rodriguez hitting home run No. 500. In 2009, the current stadium’s inaugural year, fans brought their cameras out to capture Jeter’s 2,722nd career hit, which snapped a tie with Lou Gehrig (2,721) and gave the shortstop sole possession of first place on the Yankees’ all-time hits list. wholesale nike shoes

Rodriguez would join the 600 home run club in 2010, and now Jeter is on the brink of recording his 3,000th career hit in the house that he, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams built.

Now a mere three hits shy of the mark, Jeter is expected to reach it during the Yankees’ four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, which opens tonight.
cheap coach handbags
It will be a spectacle that will attract crowds large enough to sell out every game of the four-game set up until the moment occurs. And with New York only a half-game ahead of the Boston Red Sox and four in front of Tampa in the AL East standings, these upcoming intradivisional clashes will hold weight.

Demand for tickets and ticket prices have soared in anticipation of this unique milestone: a Yankee amassing the entirety of his 3,000 hits with the team for the first time in franchise history—a fact that is somewhat mystifying considering the players throughout the past 90 years (Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, et al.) who have reached greatness wearing pinstripes. cheap jordan shoes

More Bad News for Red Sox Rotation as Lester is Placed on DL

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:00 am

If some fans of the Boston Red Sox didn’t already have enough cause for concern about the state of the pitching staff, Jon Lester’s DL stint is one more reason to be worried. The sky might not be falling for the Red Sox (after all, they still have the second best record in the American League), but Lester’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. During Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays (July 5), Lester left after 50 pitches in 4 innings. It wasn’t until later that fans like me found out that Lester was in too much pain to stay on the mound. wholesale nike shoes

Lester had suffered a back strain involving his lower lat muscle, and wasn’t able to finish what had been an otherwise excellent start up until then. He had 5 strikeouts in those 4 shutout innings, as good as we’ve seen from the touted ace so far this season. The 10-4 Lester didn’t get the win, but there was little doubt that he was on track for one of his best outings in recent weeks. It was enough to bring his ERA down to 3.31.
On June 30th, Lester recorded a win against the Philadelphia Phillies after allowing just 2 hits in 7 innings. It was the Red Sox’ only win in the series against the Phillies, and a satisfying return to form for Lester. It’s easy to forget that Lester had a frustrating outing in Pittsburgh the week before, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings on June 24th. Nevertheless, the last two outings have been exactly what fans expected from Lester going into the season. cheap sunglasses

The lat problem was enough for Terry Francona and company to put Lester on a 15-day DL stint. While Lester was reportedly unconcerned about the injury, saying he “should be fine,” Francona seems to think that the rest is a good precautionary measure. “We need to take it easy and let him get better,” Francona said.

There isn’t much worry in the public face Tito and Lester are putting out there, but it’s hard to imagine that the decision was made lightly. Lester’s DL stint starts on the same day Clay Buchholz was scheduled to see an orthopedic specialist in North Carolina. Buchholz has already been on the DL since mid-June.

John Lackey, the one pitcher who seems to need time on the DL the most, is steadily becoming the fans’ worst nightmare with every start. Time Wakefield is no Lackey (that’s a good thing), but his inconsistency is leaving this fan on edge. Suffice it to say, the rotation is in deep trouble. cheap jordan shoes

Meanwhile, Carl Crawford and Jed Lowrie have been on the DL for about as long as Buchholz, and it looks like Crawford won’t be back until July 18th at the earliest. As the Red Sox suffer mid-season wear and tear, will they keep falling behind the Yankees? cheap nfl jerseys

CFL team looking into Pryor

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:18 am

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired the negotiating rights to Terrelle Pryor and have spoken to Pryor’s lawyer about bringing the former Ohio State quarterback to the Canadian Football League. cheap jordan shoes

James was in a meeting and had yet to speak with Pryor about the Roughriders, however. James said he did not believe Pryor had ever mentioned the CFL as a strong possibility in their conversations.

Pryor’s attorney, Larry James, said Wednesday that the CFL is a genuine possibility for the ex-Buckeye.

“Yeah, it’s like I told (the Roughriders). My house is not for sale, but at the right price, it’s on the market,” James said. wholesale nike shoes

Pryor, a three-year starter for the Buckeyes, announced on Tuesday that he is giving up his senior season while the NCAA investigates Ohio State players getting improper benefits, including tattoos, cash and possible sweetheart deals on cars. Pryor has admitted he broke NCAA rules by accepting improper benefits from a Columbus tattoo-parlor owner.

Roughriders general manager Brendan Taman told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the team owned Pryor’s CFL negotiation rights and was intrigued by the 6-foot-6, 233-pound quarterback.

“He’s a heck of an athlete,” Taman said. “We get a lot of U.S. college football up here. We’re well aware of him. With the (bigger) field up here in Canada, with the athlete that he is, he would be an interesting component to come up here and run around and do some things as a quarterback.”

Taman said he was more concerned about Pryor’s passing ability than his past.

“It (the CFL) is a pass-oriented league, so that’s one thing he’d have to master,” he said. “But as a runner he would flourish up here, I know.” cheap coach handbags

Asked if the ongoing NCAA investigation into Pryor and the fact that he was unable to complete his college career would be a concern for the Roughriders, Taman said no.

“Any time we sign a player we check into their character and whatnot,” he said. “If we get these talks advanced, we’d obviously have a thorough discussion with him and get input back on exactly what went down. What little I know about him, I don’t think there’s anything that’s a major red flag that he’s just totally a kid you would ignore.”

Taman said Pryor is being looked at by the Roughriders strictly as a quarterback. There had been speculation that Pryor might have to switch to wide receiver or tight end in the pros because of his footwork and arm strength. cheap nfl jerseys

Pryor has other options. He could make himself available for an NFL supplemental draft, although there are questions about whether one will be held due to the labor unrest in the league.

He also could take a year off to heal from ankle surgery last January and prepare for next year’s NFL draft. Many experts think that might be the way to go.

“When we look at him athletically I think he’s a good athlete, but I don’t think he’s an athlete like (former Auburn QB and Heisman Trophy winner) Cam Newton,” said NFL draft analyst and former general manager of the Dallas Cowboys Gil Brandt.

Or Pryor could even join another player who fell into disfavor and did not finish his Ohio State career, running back Maurice Clarett, and sign with a team in the United Football League. Clarett plays for the Omaha Nighthawks.

James said he will discuss the opportunities with Pryor, possibly next week.

“We would try to get through next week in order to do our due diligence, in order to figure out where we are,” James said. “No. 1, try to figure out whether the NFL’s going to have a supplemental draft. If they are, what’s the timetable and what’s the protocol. Then we’d also explore what are the processes and procedures for the Canadian league and what would be the dates and deadlines and decisions to be made.” cheap sunglasses

Nighthawks coach Joe Moglia didn’t sound excited about the idea of that pairing.

“The job of any coach is to do what’s in the best interest of his players, his coaches and his fans,” he said. “If that were to come up, we would take a look at that. I’m not the type of guy normally who hypothesizes on something that probably, under normal circumstances, may not happen.”

He added, “And any other options that might be available for Terrelle. So we’re going to go through A, B, C options.” cheap caps

Bruins rout Canucks, even Stanley Cup finals

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:14 am

BOSTON – The tattered, kitschy Bruins jacket has been moving around the Boston locker room for the past few months, going to the most valuable player in every victory. cheap jordan shoes

That strange, old jacket bought on eBay has become the Bruins’ most valuable trophy.

After two dominant games in Boston, the Bruins are halfway to winning a bigger, shinier prize.

It belonged to Nathan Horton when he went down with a serious concussion two days earlier in the Stanley Cup finals. He showed up in the Bruins’ locker room Wednesday night, delighting his teammates by putting the jacket on Rich Peverley.

Tim Thomas made 38 saves in his third shutout of the playoffs, Peverley scored two goals after replacing Horton on Boston’s top line, and the Bruins emphatically evened the finals at two games apiece with a 4-0 victory over the foundering Vancouver Canucks in Game 4. wholesale nike shoes

The Bruins rolled through Game 4 on an emotional high that began with a stirring pregame tribute to Horton, who will miss the rest of the series after a late hit in Game 3 from Vancouver defenseman Aaron Rome, who was suspended for four games.

“When I personally got to see him in the locker room, I was incredibly happy,” Thomas said. “It gave me a big boost. He was there to pass the jacket on. The team would have been happy leaving it with Horty for the rest of the series, but he wanted to give it away and keep the tradition going. … Watching him going down, we want to finish what we started for him.” nfl jerseys

Michael Ryder and Brad Marchand also scored and the Bruins chased Roberto Luongo early in the third period after Vancouver’s star goalie allowed his 12th goal in less than two brutal games in Boston.

“It’s always easier to be at home,” Marchand said. “We feed off the energy, off our fans. They just bring out the best in us. … Just seems everyone is so focused right now.”

The finals are now a best-of-three, with Game 5 in Vancouver on Friday night.

Game 6 is Monday night back in Boston. After outscoring Vancouver 12-1 in the last two games, the Bruins are halfway to their first NHL title since 1972 — but they’ll have to win at least once on the West Coast.

Boston opened its first finals trip in 21 years with two deflating one-goal losses last week in Vancouver, but the Bruins have wrested all momentum from the suddenly shaky Canucks with two thoroughly dominant wins.

Luongo gave up four goals on 20 shots before Cory Schneider replaced him, ending yet another shaky defensive performance for the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Canucks, who were inexplicably passionless in Boston. cheap coach handbags

“We have two out of three with home-ice advantage, and that’s what we’ve worked for all season,” Luongo said. “We need to get playing the way we did in the first two games.”

Vancouver needed just one win in Boston to earn the chance to win the franchise’s first championship on home ice. Instead, the Canucks headed home with huge questions about their mental toughness, defense and goaltending.

“It’s not for lack of effort, not for lack of trying to win,” Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. “Give the other team credit. They’re playing a smart game, and right now they’ve been able to shut us down offensively the last two games.”

Thomas was flawless yet again in a playoff run that’s turning into the defining achievement of his winding career. He has allowed just five goals in four games in his first Stanley Cup finals, with Vancouver’s vaunted Sedin twins — the NHL’s last two scoring champions — failing to beat him.

Despite the NHL’s warning to these teams about keeping their competition between the whistles, the third period featured another handful of skirmishes. Thomas delighted Boston’s fans when he slashed Vancouver agitator Alex Burrows with 1:51 to play, precipitating another brawl.

The Bruins are winning most of them, partially on motivation from Horton’s injury.

“I thought I’d give him a little love tap,” Thomas said. “Let them know that I know what you’re doing, but I’m not going to let you do it forever. That’s all that was. A typical battle.” cheap sunglasses

Before the game, Bobby Orr — the Hall of Fame defenseman and Boston icon — wore his own No. 4 jersey as he waved a flag bearing Horton’s No. 18, drawing thunderous cheers while standing in the lower bowl under a spotlight. Hundreds of Canucks fans in blue jerseys joined in the cheers for Horton, who scored the winning goals in both of Boston’s Game 7 victories during these playoffs.

With the victory secure in the final minutes, the entire building loudly chanted Horton’s name.

Peverley, a Bruins newcomer after a late-season trade from Atlanta, lined up with David Krejci and Milan Lucic. The hardworking forward isn’t known for his scoring touch, but came through twice in the new role.

Boston went ahead midway through the first period after Krejci alertly tapped a loose puck in the neutral zone ahead to Peverley, who blew past Raffi Torres and scored just his second goal in 19 games.

The Canucks are a mess on defense after losing top blueliner Dan Hamhuis to an injury in Game 1 before Rome’s suspension. Keith Ballard struggled as Rome’s replacement, making a brutal turnover on Boston’s third goal, but Vancouver played generally shoddy team defense in front of Luongo, who hasn’t shaken his reputation for struggling in big games — even with an Olympic gold medal around his neck.

Vancouver’s power play, the NHL’s best in the regular season, also has lost its mojo, going 0 for 6 in Game 4 to drop to 1 for 22 in the series. The Sedin twins are the NHL’s past two scoring champions, but they’ve barely made an impact on this series under Boston’s steady defensive pressure.

The Canucks have been routed before in this postseason, losing consecutive games to Chicago by a combined 12-2 after taking a 3-0 lead in that first-round series.

Perhaps the top-seeded Canucks’ only good news out of Boston is that the home team is dominating this series — and they’ve got two more potential home games.

Vancouver narrowly won the first two games last week, moving halfway to the franchise’s first championship and Canada’s first Cup since 1993. Boston halted Vancouver’s roll with an 8-1 victory Monday marred by Horton’s injury and numerous scuffles in the third period.

Vancouver soundly outshot Boston over the first 30 minutes of Game 4, yet the Canucks had few solid scoring chances. Most of the shots went straight at Thomas, whose much-evaluated positional game was close to perfect, particularly on an early point-blank chance for Maxim Lapierre.

Boston took control 1:18 later during 4-on-4 play when Patrice Bergeron forced Ballard’s turnover behind the Canucks’ net and chipped it in front to Marchand, who easily scored over Luongo’s left shoulder. The Boston crowd serenaded Vancouver with chants of “Luonnnngo! Luonnnngo!” cheap caps

Luongo finally left after Peverley scored again early in the third period, with the Boston fans roaring as Cory Schneider replaced him.

The Bruins have never played this deep into June in franchise history, and summer temperatures in the 80s made the Canucks worry about the quality of the Boston ice. Vancouver has much bigger worries heading home.

After Peverley’s early goal, Ryder scored midway through the second period on an innocuous shot that somehow fluttered past Luongo. The puck might have deflected off the stick of defenseman Sami Salo, who played Ryder much too softly.

NOTES: Bruins rookie Tyler Seguin was back in the lineup in Horton’s absence, earning an assist on Ryder’s goal. … Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin took his first shot of the series in the opening seconds of Game 4. The pass-first playmaker, last season’s MVP, didn’t have a shot in the first three games. … Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended the game, socializing with Orr beforehand. Canadian actress Rachel McAdams and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash also were in the crowd. Nash, an avid Canucks fan, cheered on his brother-in-law, Vancouver C Manny Malhotra. … The Bruins improved to 10-1 when scoring first in the postseason.

Hairston suspended for one game

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:14 am

Washington Nationals third baseman Jerry Hairston was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount Sunday for making contact with umpire Ed Hickox during a game against the San Diego Padres. cheap jordan shoes

Major League Baseball cited Hairston’s ”aggressive actions” during the bottom of the seventh inning of Friday night’s game in announcing the discipline. Hairston is appealing the decision and was in the lineup for the conclusion of the Nationals’ series against the Padres on Sunday.

Hairston said he asked Hickox for time, and he thought the umpire granted it. When San Diego’s Clayton Richard delivered, Hairston hurriedly swung, flied out to center and began arguing with Hickox. cheap sunglasses

Moments later, Hickox ejected him.

”I don’t know why he ejected me,” Hairston said. ”I didn’t push him or shove him in any way – and the video clearly shows that.”cheap nfl jerseys

Hairston and Richard were teammates with San Diego last year. Hairston says that Richard habitually pitches before hitters are set in the batter’s box.

”I asked for time out earlier — and he gave it to me. I don’t think he recalled that,” Hairston said. ”He didn’t try and bait me or anything. I just wanted him to get help. He felt he didn’t need it and he ejected me.” cheap coach handbags

Hickox was umpiring second base Sunday. MLB said he would not be available to comment while Hairston’s appeal is pending.

Diamondbacks cap sweep of Astros

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:12 am

The surprising Arizona Diamondbacks are in first place in the NL West. Shhhh. Kirk Gibson wants to keep it quiet.  cheap jordan shoes

Xavier Nady hit a two-run double in the eighth inning, helping the Diamondbacks rally for a 4-2 victory and a series sweep of the Houston Astros on Sunday.

Still, no bragging, please.

”We just need to remain humble and we’ll go to work this home stand,” Gibson said. ”We’ve got something planned for Tuesday, we got something planned for Wednesday. We’ll just keep seeking out and searching out to be better and better and to be able to handle more situations that are ahead of us.”

The Diamondbacks completed a 6-1 road trip and they are 14-2 in their past 16 games. cheap nfl jerseys

”It’s not a superstition, it’s just the way it is,” Gibson said. ”There are no guarantees. Nothing will ever be easy in this game.”

Nady’s go-ahead double off Jeff Fulchino (1-3) gave the Diamondbacks their first lead and Juan Miranda followed with an RBI single for a two-run cushion.

It was a comforting moment for Nady, since he struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning and took a called third strike in the fifth. Gibson gave Nady a boost after his first inning strikeout.

”He came up to me after I struck out with the bases loaded,” Nady said. ”You want to get a hit in a big situation like that and as the game went on I thought my swing was better and I was seeing the ball better. He kept me mentally fired up. He said you’re going to go get them.” cheap coach handbags

Gibson wasn’t in the dugout for Nady’s big hit. He was ejected in the fourth inning for disputing home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn’s balk call on pitcher Josh Collmenter.

”They said I stepped toward home,” Collmenter said. ”I took another look at my mark on the mound and it didn’t look like it but from his vantage point it might have looked different. I was surprised at that.” cheap sunglasses

So was Gibson, who came out to discuss the issue and was immediately tossed.

”I don’t want to get into that,” Gibson said.
